Spooling

nounStandard termNonwovens

Winding a narrow strip back and forth across a wide core, like thread on a spool, to pack very long lengths.

In traverse winding the strip moves side to side as it winds, building a wide, stable package that holds many times the length of a pancake roll of the same strip. Converting lines get fewer changes and splices, and narrow materials travel without collapsing. The trade-off is more complex winders and some risk of edge damage.

Heard on the job

Customer wants the elastic ears spooled, not on pancakes, to cut the splices per shift.
