Slitting

nounStandard termNonwovens

Cutting a wide nonwoven roll lengthwise into narrower rolls on a slitter-rewinder.

The mother roll unwinds through razor, shear or score knives, and each strip is rewound on its own core at the width the converter ordered. Clean edges, accurate width, even tension and a well-built roll are the quality targets. Dull knives or poor setup leave fuzzy edges, dust and dished or telescoped rolls.

Heard on the job

Slitting set is 12 lanes at 180 millimeters, and lane 7 keeps coming out fuzzy, change that knife.

Insider tip

Change knives on a schedule, not when edges look bad; dull knives shed dust onto every roll long before an edge looks fuzzy.
