Butt rolls pile up when mother roll lengths do not divide evenly into the customer's ordered length. They are sold as shorts, used for trials or ground into repro, and until then they eat warehouse space. Planning slit sets around them is a constant headache for converting supervisors.
Stack of butt rolls in the corner is getting out of hand, ask sales if anyone takes shorts.
