Seconds

nounShop talkNonwovens

Off-quality nonwoven sold at a discount instead of as prime, such as start-up material or off-spec rolls.

Rolls that miss spec on weight, strength or appearance, or that were made during start-ups and grade changes, are graded as seconds. Some go to lower-value markets such as packaging, agriculture or furniture, and the rest goes to repro or waste. The share of seconds is one of the first efficiency numbers a plant manager checks.
