Aperturing

nounStandard termNonwovens

Making a regular pattern of holes in a nonwoven, mainly so liquid passes through topsheets faster.

Holes are formed with heated pins, by hydroentangling over a patterned drum, or by perforating and then stretching the fabric. Apertured topsheets let thick fluids such as menses or loose stool pass quickly, and the holes also signal dryness to the user. Hole size, open area and clean hole edges are checked on the finished fabric.

Heard on the job

Aperturing pins on the edge are worn, so half the holes in lane one aren't opening.
