Guided bend test in which strips cut from a test weld, as face, root or side bends, are bent around a mandrel to a set radius, stretching the weld. Fusion defects and cracks open up, and codes limit the size of any opening, commonly to about 1/8 inch. It is the usual pass or fail test for welder qualification and part of most procedure qualifications.
Root bend opened up at the tie-in, a quarter-inch crack, so that bend test is a bust.
Most failed bend coupons crack at starts, stops and tie-ins, so that is where test practice pays off.
