An early mechanical typesetting machine that assembles matrices and casts an entire line of text as a single lead slug. It operated as a simpler, cheaper competitor to the dominant linecasting systems. The operator uses a keyboard to drop character molds into a line, which is then filled with molten type metal to create the printing surface.
Heard on the job
The museum acquired a working monoline, but the matrices are too worn to cast a clean slug.
