Linecasting

nounStandard termPrinting

The automated process of casting complete lines of text in molten lead.

A historic typesetting method where an operator uses a keyboard to assemble brass matrices, and the machine injects molten lead alloy to cast a complete, solid line of type. Machines like the Linotype and Intertype revolutionized publishing by replacing hand-setting of individual letters, vastly increasing the speed of newspaper and book production.

Heard on the job

The noise in the composing room was deafening when all twenty linecasting machines were running at once.
