Linoblock

nounStandard termPrinting

A piece of linoleum mounted on a block for relief carving and printing.

A printing matrix made of a layer of linoleum, often mounted on a rigid wooden base to bring it up to type-high thickness. The smooth, grainless surface is carved away to leave a raised design that will accept ink and transfer it to paper.

Heard on the job

We need to mount this linoblock on thicker wood so it reaches type-high before we lock it in the chase.
