Pica stick

nounShop talkPrinting

A specialized metal or wooden ruler marked in picas and points used by printers to measure type and layout dimensions.

A pica stick is a flat measuring tool calibrated in typographic units rather than inches or centimeters. It typically features scales for picas, half-picas, and points, and sometimes includes scales for agate lines. Compositors and layout artists use it to check column widths, measure leading, and ensure that locked-up type forms match the exact dimensions required for the press.
