Pinfeed

nounStandard termPrinting

A paper-handling mechanism that uses small sprocketed wheels to advance continuous paper with punched margins.

A pinfeed is a tractor mechanism found on older line printers and impact printers to pull continuous fanfold paper through the machine. It consists of rotating belts or wheels fitted with small metal or plastic pins that engage with corresponding holes punched along the left and right edges of the paper. This ensures precise vertical registration and prevents the paper from slipping during high-speed, continuous printing.
