Short cross

nounStandard termPrinting

The shorter of the two intersecting metal bars inside a printing chase.

The shorter dividing iron bar that spans the width of a chase, intersecting with the long cross to divide the frame into four smaller sections. It helps stabilize the locked-up type and prevents the chase from bowing outward under the immense pressure of the quoins.
