Rounce

nounStandard termPrinting

A crank handle used to move the bed of a handpress under the platen.

The manual crank or winch mechanism on a traditional handpress that drives the bed carrying the inked typeform. Turning it winds straps around a wooden or metal drum, pulling the carriage smoothly under the platen for the impression and then rolling it back out for the next sheet.

Heard on the job

Give the rounce a steady turn so the bed glides in without jarring the type.

Insider tip

A jerky motion on the rounce can cause the type to shift or slur the impression.
