Handpress

nounStandard termPrinting

A manually operated printing machine that applies pressure to ink and paper.

A traditional printing press where the operator manually inks the form, positions the paper, and pulls a lever or turns a screw to apply pressure. These presses rely entirely on human muscle rather than steam or electrical power. They are now primarily used by fine art printers and boutique letterpress shops for short, high-quality runs.

Heard on the job

We pulled fifty proofs on the iron handpress before moving the form to the cylinder press.
