Headband

nounStandard termPrinting

A thin strip of metal attached to the tympan of a traditional printing press.

A narrow iron band or slip affixed to the top edge of the tympan on an early handpress. It serves to secure the parchment or cloth covering taut across the tympan frame, ensuring a smooth, resilient backing when the platen presses the paper against the inked type.

Tighten the headband before we pull the next sheet, the tympan is getting loose and causing a slur.
