Intertype

nounStandard termPrinting

A historic linecasting machine that sets and casts lines of metal type.

A mechanized typesetting machine that casts entire lines of type as a single metal slug. It functions as a direct competitor to the Linotype and uses interchangeable brass matrices and magazines, allowing operators to set text rapidly from a keyboard.

Heard on the job

We need to pull the magazine off the Intertype to clean the escapements before the afternoon run.

Insider tip

Because the matrices were interchangeable, many shops ran both Intertype and Linotype machines side by side using the same matrix libraries.
