Rake

nounStandard termFarming

A toothed implement used by hand or pulled by a tractor to gather loose material or level soil.

A hand tool or tractor-drawn implement equipped with a row of tines or teeth. Hand versions are used to gather debris, smooth seedbeds, and break up soil clods. Tractor-mounted versions sweep cut forage into windrows so a baler can pick the crop up efficiently.

Heard on the job

Hook up the rotary rake to the tractor so we can windrow that alfalfa before it gets too dry.

Insider tip

Tractor-drawn rakes must be adjusted to the correct ground height to avoid sweeping dirt and rocks into the hay crop.
