Mower-conditioner

nounStandard termFarming

A harvesting machine that cuts forage crops and crushes the stems to accelerate drying.

This implement combines a cutter bar or rotary discs with a set of heavy rollers or metal flails. As the crop is cut, it passes through the conditioning mechanism, which cracks the waxy outer layer of the plant stems. This mechanical crimping allows moisture to escape rapidly, reducing the time the hay must lie in the field before it can be safely baled.
