Tedder

nounStandard termFarming

A tractor-drawn implement that lifts and fluffs cut hay to accelerate the drying process.

Using a series of rotating tines, this machine catches freshly cut forage and throws it backward, spreading it loosely over the field. This fluffing action exposes the wet underside of the crop to the sun and wind, drastically reducing the time required to cure the hay. Proper use prevents mold growth and ensures the crop reaches a safe moisture level before baling.

Heard on the job

The morning dew is finally off, so hook up the tedder and hit the lower meadow so we can bale tomorrow.

Do not mix it up with

  • Rake: A tedder scatters the hay to dry it, while a rake gathers the dried hay into windrows for the baler.
