Tomato cage

nounStandard termFarming

A wire framework placed around a tomato plant to keep its stems and fruit off the ground.

A conical or cylindrical support structure made of galvanized wire mesh, used to contain sprawling indeterminate and determinate tomato vines. The cage provides physical support for heavy fruit clusters, improves air circulation to prevent fungal diseases, and makes harvesting easier. Plants grow up through the center and drape their branches over the horizontal rings.

Heard on the job

Push the legs of the tomato cage deep into the soil before the plant gets too tall, or the wind will blow the whole thing over.
