Turnplough

nounStandard termFarming

A plough designed to cut and completely flip over a layer of soil.

A primary tillage implement equipped with a curved mouldboard that lifts and completely overturns the soil slice cut by the share. This action buries surface weeds and crop residue while exposing deeper soil to weathering.

Heard on the job

We need to run the turnplough through the lower pasture to break up that heavy sod.

Also heard as

Do not mix it up with

  • Swing plough: A swing plough has no depth wheel, whereas a turnplough specifically refers to the soil-inverting action of the mouldboard.
