Share

nounStandard termFarming

The leading cutting edge of a plough or cultivator that slices horizontally through the soil.

The sharp, replaceable metal blade at the very front of a plough bottom or tillage implement. As the tractor pulls the implement forward, the share makes the initial horizontal cut under the soil surface, severing weed roots and lifting the dirt so the mouldboard can turn it over. It takes the brunt of the wear and tear from rocks and hard ground.

Heard on the job

We hit a massive rock in the lower field and completely snapped the share on the third bottom.

Insider tip

Shares are considered wear parts. Farmers keep spares in the shop because running a dull or broken share drastically increases fuel consumption and does a poor job killing weeds.
