Stalk-cutter

nounStandard termFarming

A tractor-drawn implement equipped with rotating blades to chop crop residue.

This heavy implement uses a series of heavy-duty spinning blades or drums to slice through thick, rigid plant stems left in the field after harvest. It breaks down tough materials like corn or cotton stalks into smaller pieces, accelerating decomposition and making it easier to incorporate the residue into the soil during subsequent tillage.

Heard on the job

Hook up the stalk-cutter to the big Deere and run over that corn stubble before we disc the field.
