Stubble

verbStandard termFarming

To grow a secondary crop from the root systems left behind after a harvest.

The practice of producing a subsequent crop directly from the root systems and lower stems remaining in the field after the primary harvest. Instead of plowing the field and reseeding, the farmer allows the existing roots to send up new shoots. This is highly common in sugarcane and forage grasses, saving both seed costs and tillage time.
