Plough

nounStandard termFarming

A heavy farm implement with a blade used to break up soil and cut furrows in preparation for sowing.

A plough cuts, lifts and turns over the top layer of soil, burying weeds and crop residue while bringing fresh nutrients to the surface. Traditional designs feature a coulter to cut the sod, a share to slice horizontally and a mouldboard to invert the slice. While essential in conventional tillage, its use has declined in areas adopting conservation agriculture due to soil erosion concerns.
