Pleach

verbStandard termFarming

To interweave the living branches of trees or shrubs to form a dense hedge or living fence.

Pleaching is a traditional pruning and training technique where pliable young branches are bent, notched and woven together. As the branches grow, they often graft together naturally, creating an impenetrable barrier or an elevated canopy on bare trunks. It is used historically for livestock enclosures and formally in ornamental garden design to create aerial hedges.
