Ram

nounStandard termFarming

An intact male sheep kept primarily for breeding purposes.

A mature, uncastrated male sheep used in a flock to mate with ewes and produce lambs. Rams are selected for their genetic traits, such as wool quality, meat yield, or hardiness, which they pass on to the next generation. They require separate management from the rest of the flock outside of the breeding season due to aggressive behavior and specific nutritional needs.

Heard on the job

Turn the ram in with those ewes next week so we can time the lambing for early spring.

Insider tip

A ram's fertility and body condition score should be checked a month before turning him out with the ewes.
