Requeen

verbStandard termFarming

To introduce a new queen bee into an existing honeybee colony.

The apiary process of removing an old, failing, or aggressive queen bee and replacing her with a newly mated queen. Beekeepers perform this operation to improve the genetics, temperament, and brood production of the hive. The new queen is typically introduced in a small cage plugged with candy, allowing the worker bees to slowly acclimate to her pheromones before she is released into the colony.
