Slap marker

nounStandard termFarming

A long-handled tool fitted with a block of sharp pins used to tattoo livestock.

A slap marker looks like a heavy paddle with a metal head containing a specific sequence of needle-like pins. The operator dips the pin head into a pad of food-safe tattoo ink and strikes the animal firmly on the shoulder. The impact drives the ink into the dermal layer, creating a permanent identification number.

Heard on the job

Dip the slap marker in the ink pad after every second pig to get a clean read.
