Slurry

nounStandard termFarming

A liquid mixture of animal waste and water used as an agricultural fertilizer.

A semi-liquid manure created by washing down livestock housing, combining animal urine, feces, and wash water. It is stored in large tanks, lagoons, or pits until it breaks down. Farmers then pump it into tanker wagons and spread or inject it into fields to add nitrogen and phosphorus to the soil.

Heard on the job

We need to pump out the dairy pit and spread the slurry on the bottom pasture before it rains.

Insider tip

Injecting slurry directly into the soil rather than broadcasting it reduces nitrogen loss to the air and significantly cuts down on the smell.
