Slap mark

nounStandard termFarming

A permanent identification tattoo applied to the shoulder of a pig before slaughter.

A slap mark is an ink tattoo driven into the skin of a market hog to trace the animal back to its farm of origin. The mark remains visible on the carcass even after the hair is removed during processing. Packers require this traceability for disease control and payment processing.
