Queen

verbShop talkFarming

To lead and reproduce within a bee colony as its sole fertile female.

This term describes the action of a fertile female bee establishing her dominance and laying eggs to sustain the hive population. Beekeepers use it to describe the status of a hive, noting whether a colony is successfully producing brood or if it has lost its reproductive center. A hive that fails to do this effectively will quickly collapse as older workers die off.
