Serger

nounStandard termTextiles

A specialized sewing machine that trims fabric edges and encloses them in thread simultaneously.

A multi-thread sewing machine designed to create an overlock stitch while a built-in blade cuts off the raw edge of the fabric. It uses three to five cones of thread and loopers instead of bobbins to bind the edge, preventing fraying and allowing seam stretch. Apparel manufacturers and tailors rely on it to finish seams quickly and cleanly, especially on knits.

Heard on the job

Run those side seams through the serger before you hem the bottom.

Insider tip

Always test your tension settings on a scrap of the actual garment fabric, as sergers are notoriously sensitive to thickness changes.
