The rover, or roving frame, takes thick slivers of combed fiber and draws them out while adding a slight, temporary twist. This intermediate step reduces the thickness of the fiber bundle and gives it just enough strength to be handled by the final spinning frame. Without this machine, the transition from heavy sliver to fine yarn would break the fibers.
Heard on the job
Check the tension on the number three rover, we're getting too many breaks before the spinning frame.
Insider tip
If the rover adds too much twist, the drafting rollers on the spinning frame cannot draw the fiber out further.
