Hem

nounStandard termTextiles

The finished lower edge of a garment made by folding the fabric back and sewing it down.

The folded and stitched margin at the bottom of a garment or fabric panel. It encloses the raw edge to prevent fraying and adds weight to make the fabric drape properly. Hems can be blind-stitched, topstitched, or rolled depending on the fabric weight and desired aesthetic.

Heard on the job

Drop the hem on those trousers by an inch so they break cleanly over the shoe.

Insider tip

Always press the fold before stitching a hem to ensure a crisp, even line without puckering.
