Locker loop

nounStandard termTextiles

A small fabric strip sewn into the back yoke of a shirt for hanging on a hook.

This functional detail consists of a narrow piece of folded and stitched fabric, usually matching the shirt material, attached at the center back pleat or the inside collar seam. Garment makers include it to allow the shirt to be hung cleanly on a peg without a hanger, preventing wrinkles in athletic or casual settings. It is a traditional feature on Oxford cloth button-down shirts.

Heard on the job

Center the locker loop exactly over the box pleat before you topstitch the yoke down.

Insider tip

When sewing a locker loop, cut the strip on the straight grain to prevent it from stretching out of shape when the shirt is hung.
