Riffle

nounStandard termMining

A raised cleat or groove in a sluice box designed to trap heavy precious metals.

A physical barrier placed across the bottom of a sluice box or wash trough to disrupt the flow of water and slurry. The resulting turbulence allows heavy particles like gold to drop out of suspension and settle behind the barrier, while lighter waste material washes away.
