Rid

nounStandard termMining

The loose surface soil and rubble that must be cleared to expose solid rock in a quarry.

An older quarrying term for the overburden, consisting of soil, clay, and weathered rock fragments, that sits on top of the valuable stone deposit. This material has no commercial value and must be stripped away entirely before drilling and blasting of the solid rock can commence.
