Callow

nounShop talkMining

The upper layer of loose rubble and soil covering bedrock.

An older quarrying term for the shallow, weathered layer of soil, clay, and loose rubble sitting above solid bedrock. This unstable surface material must be stripped away entirely before drilling and blasting of the valuable stone can begin.

Heard on the job

We need the dozers to push back the callow before we can start laying out the drill pattern for the first bench.
