Miner's moss

nounShop talkMining

A woven vinyl matting used in sluice boxes to trap fine gold particles.

A specialized, unbacked vinyl loop carpeting placed in the bottom of a sluice box to catch and hold heavy minerals. The open, tangled fibers allow water and light sediment to wash over while trapping dense particles like fine gold, preventing them from being washed out of the recovery system.
