Skip

nounStandard termMining

A guided hoist container used to lift ore or waste rock out of a mine shaft.

A large steel vessel that travels up and down a vertical or inclined mine shaft to transport bulk materials to the surface. Unlike cages, which carry personnel and equipment, skips are designed specifically for dumping rock. They are loaded from underground bins and automatically discharge their payload into the headframe bins.

Heard on the job

We need to clear the loading pocket before the next skip comes down.

Do not mix it up with

  • Cage: A cage moves people and supplies, while a skip moves broken rock.
