Spire

nounShop talkMining

A traditional tube or fuse used to carry a flame to a blasting charge.

An older mining term for the fuse assembly or hollow tube inserted into a borehole to initiate an explosive charge. Miners would light the spire to communicate the fire down to the main powder charge before retreating to a safe distance. Electronic detonators and shock tubes have completely replaced spires in industrial blasting.

Heard on the job

Make sure the spire is seated deep in the powder before you stem the hole.
