Spurn

nounShop talkMining

A block or pillar of coal deliberately left in place to support an overhanging mass.

A temporary or permanent support made from the native rock or coal itself, left unmined to hold up the roof or an overhanging section of the face. Spurns prevent premature collapse while miners work underneath or nearby, acting as natural pillars in room-and-pillar or traditional hand-got mining.

Heard on the job

Leave a solid spurn on the left side of the face until we get the roof bolts installed.
