Smallman clip

nounStandard termMining

A mechanical clamp used to attach coal tubs to a continuously moving haulage rope.

A lever-operated friction grip that secures a mine car to an endless wire rope system. When the lever is thrown, the jaws bite down on the moving cable, pulling the tub along the tracks. Releasing the lever detaches the tub instantly, allowing it to coast into a siding or loading station.

Heard on the job

Make sure the Smallman clip is tight, or that tub will slip backward on the incline.
