The primary hoisting engine for a vertical or inclined mine shaft. It consists of a massive powered drum or friction sheave that winds the steel wire ropes attached to the conveyances, safely transporting miners, equipment, and blasted rock between the surface and the underground levels.
The winder tripped out on overspeed during the last rock hoist, so the electrician is checking the sensors.
In British and Australian mining, "winder" is the standard term, whereas North American miners almost exclusively call it a "hoist."
