Forge

verbStandard termMetallurgy

To shape metal using localized compressive forces, usually while hot.

The process of plastically deforming metal into a desired shape through hammering, pressing, or rolling. Unlike casting where metal is melted, forging keeps the metal solid, which aligns the grain structure to follow the shape of the part. This directional grain flow makes forged components significantly stronger and more impact-resistant than cast or machined equivalents.

Heard on the job

We need to forge these billets at 2200 degrees to get the grain flow right for the crankshafts.
