Drop hammer

nounStandard termMetallurgy

A heavy forging machine that shapes hot metal by dropping a massive weight onto a die.

A gravity-driven or power-assisted forging press that relies on the kinetic energy of a falling ram to deform metal. The upper die is attached to the ram, which is lifted mechanically, pneumatically, or hydraulically, then released to strike the lower die holding the workpiece. The sudden impact forces the metal to fill the die cavity.

Keep your tongs clear when the drop hammer comes down or it will snatch them right out of your hands.

Insider tip

The foundation for a drop hammer is often massive and isolated from the rest of the shop floor to prevent the extreme impact vibrations from damaging nearby machinery.
