Direct reduced iron is a highly porous, solid sponge iron made by reacting iron ore with a reducing gas at temperatures below the melting point. Because it bypasses the blast furnace, it contains very few tramp elements and serves as a premium, clean feedstock for electric arc furnaces. It is highly reactive and must be passivated or briquetted to prevent spontaneous combustion during transport.
