Forestone

nounStandard termMetallurgy

An adjustable cast-iron block used in historic lead smelting hearths.

A heavy cast-iron plate or block that sits across the front of an ore-hearth, resting between the keystones. It acts as a movable dam to contain the molten lead and slag during smelting. Operators adjust its position backward or forward to control the draft and access the charge.

Heard on the job

Push the forestone back a few inches to let the hearth breathe better.
