Work-stone

nounStandard termMetallurgy

A sloping cast iron plate placed at the front of a historic metallurgical hearth.

A heavy, inclined iron plate positioned at the working opening of an early finery or puddling furnace. It provides a durable, heat-resistant surface for the operator to rest heavy tools on while manipulating the semi-solid metal inside the hearth. The slope helps drain away excess slag dragged out with the iron.
